That Which We Call A...

2022 QuiltCon Entry - "That Which We Call A..."

Concepts and Creation:

I have always loved the concept of optical illusions and using simplistic designs like lines to create an overall image. I used the optical illusion technique called Halftone for this quilt, which essentially cuts an image into tiny black and white slices, and your brain fills in the gaps. Additionally, Halftone works by the thicker the line, forcing a perspective of dark or light.

Also, this quilt represents my personal growth and self-perceptions. Am I what you see at a distance, or am I all the tiny details and flaws?

Pre Construction:

Using the program Halftone Pro - I first took my photo of a rose and created the halftone illusion. Then, using the program QuiltersAssistant, I began my pattern by making tiny stripes and subdividing them into three-piece sections. One of the most significant hassles in the preconstruction step was making sure that I kept all my small pieces organized! For piecing, I used the technique of indirect Paperpiecing, which elevated picking out the paper.

Construction:

Once all the stripes were created, the quilt went together fairly quickly.

The pattern used for this quilting/topstitching is: Waves and Pearls - by @Wasatch Quilting

About the Name

This quilt represents but is not a rose was a nice parallel to Shakespeare's Line from Romeo & Juliet. "

What's in a name? that which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet;."

Final Thoughts:

This quilt almost did not happen! Halfway through this project, I started to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tiny pieces. Also, as the final result does not appear until every last part is added, I began to doubt my planning and sanity! Thank you to my dear Ray, who encouraged me to take a break but not give up on my project.

Also, to anyone out there that is interested in tackling a large paper piecing project, I recommend investing in the dissolvable paper! Although I used the indirect paper piecing, there was still ALOT of paper to pull!

I would like to eventually try and recreate this quilt using some of the techniques that I gained while making this quilt!

I hope you all enjoy this quilt! I am more than happy to talk about it all day!

This quilt did not place at QuiltCon, but I am just happy I got to see it hang at the show!!!

The Quilt top before the quilting process begins. Yes there are threads all over the place.

Practice Run!

The Quilt Top is nearly Complete! There is still paper on the back! Took this picture on a fairly windy day!

Because there is still paper on the back, there is a significant crease in the center of the quilt!
