Spiral Aloe

2017 Quilt Con Entry - Non Contender

This Quilt was inspired by an Aloe Polyphylla aka “Spiral Aloe” that I saw at a garden show. The continuous geometric shapes entranced me, and I knew that I must turn this into a quilt. Yet, how do I replicate the natural phenomena with pure piecing (no applique) only? This problem ended up being exceedingly challenging as the simple alternative of applique just didn’t fit with my concept of this being a fresh and modern quilt. After Careful consideration and the advantage of the Computer Program Quilter's Assistant, I created a series of paper templates.

This quilt contains 12 Kona solids and utilizes both foundation and English style paper piecing. All the English-style pieces (85%) were sewn done by hand. To create depth, this quilt has a layer of wool and cotton batting.

Quilting took place on my Baby Lock Jazz utilizing both a continuous spiral and dense pebbling. For a final touch, I hand sewed on Natural beads (bamboo, Jasper, and tigers eye) to give a more “Modern Western” quality.

Update: 12.27.17 This quilt was not selected for the 2018 Quilt Con Juried display, but I am still very proud of it!

All Done

This is certainly my most ambitious quilt today. I think I might go back to some easy appliques for a while!

Close up - Beading

This quilt has natural beads made of Bamboo, Jasper, Tigers eye and some jade.

Texture

While the continuous Spiral pattern adds to the movement of the Aloe, the Pebbling gives the quilt depth and texture.

Nearly Finished

Some of the y -seams were stacked on top of each other.

Almost there!
Some movement

To make things simple, I started with the inside block and worked my way out.

Foundation Piecing

These were the few parts that were done on the sewing machine using foundation piecing method.

A general outline

This is what the General shape of the Quilt will be.
