Pixels and Irons
As a quilter, I use my iron frequently. However, how often does one check their cords?
I have always considered myself a safety conscious person and make sure that I don't keep sharp objects near my chords but sometimes strange things still happen.
I have had the same Iron for over five years and it has been very faithful to me until about a week ago. Apparently, the cord had slowly been deteriorating where it attached to the Iron under the safety cord cover.
The chord was plugged in and I was pressing away at my project when suddenly, SPARKS FLEW! The eerie sound of an electrical cord shorting out grabbed my attention and shook me out of the Zen like routine that I had found myself in. A large spark landed on the ground where it promptly tried to catch the scraps of the day’s projects ablaze. I unplugged the iron and was attending to the growing embers, not realizing that one of the jettisoned sparks and melted chord had landed on my arm!
I ended up with burns on my arm and a new iron. Unfortunately, I think my choice of Iron was poor and I will be purchasing another soon.
On the Flip side my pixel quilt project that nearly went up in flames, turned out awesome even with the new iron that turns itself off every 30 seconds.
