Mermaid Scales

2019 Riley Blake MQG fabric Challenge

20190522_183738.jpg

When I was notified of the 2019 MQG Fabric challenge, I was frankly stumped by the colors.

The pallet was very soft and almost nautical. Which being a gal from Montana, I don't really do nautical, but that is what makes these fabric challenges so fin. Get out of your comfort zone and try something NEW!

As seen with several of my other quilts, I love curves and circles and I knew that I wanted to use those elements in my challenge project.

Knowing that this was going to be for the Modern Quilting Guild I utilize the following modern techniques: large blocks, asymmetry, and negative space.

The Original concept for this quilt actually came from another project that I am working on, which was inspired by the carpeting at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The blocks for this quilt were so large that I created the templates using AutoCAD. After making these giant clamshells, I don't think I ever want to try to make mini ones.

Original Concept

This is my original concept rendered with Quilt Assistant.

In the Wild

I thought it was fitting that there are two boats in the background of this photograph.

Windy Day

While trying to photograph this quilt a spring storm blew in and i had to take the pictures while fighting the wind.

Close up 1

The circles are inset (no appliques) this is one of my favorite quilting techniques.

Lots of Circles

Ruler work. To get the circles and lines in the quilting, I utilized several different quilting rulers, along with some computerization.

The Back

There is a lot of texture and movement to this quilt

No block left behind

Couldn't help myself. I had to put a circle on the back of the quilt as well.

The Quilting

To get the texture I used a double layer of Wool batting.
