Hoffman Challenge 2018
2018 Hoffman Challenge entry: "A Quick Snack"
Concepts and Creation: This Quilt was inspired by favorite reptile the Panther Chameleon who’s chromatophores can lighten and darken. (Sorry, chameleons don’t really change colors like the cartoons say, but they can do some amazing things! This quilt was also a representation of the fragile ecosystems of Madagascar. And how the movement of a single leaf from the canopy of the rainforest can spotlight a hidden moment in time. Like a reptile grabbing a quick snack!
Construction: This quilt used English paper piecing to make the out of focus rainforest background using various Hoffman batiks. The Foreground appliques were all done using needle-turned applique including the tiny scales (Hoffman Challenge fabric – Shine ON – in Black).
Free Motion Quilting (Free Hand) entire quilt was done on my Babylock Jazz.
UPDATE: This Quilt did not win any awards but it did get the privilege of traveling with the Winners. Still one of my Favorite Quilts to date!
Each Scale is Needle Turned Gem from the Challenge fabric | The Back Ground was entirely hand pieced with 2 inch Hexagons | The Challenge Coordinating fabric gave the moth an almost transparent appearance. The Antenna are about a 1/4 inch in width. |

The Layering of the scales, gave the quilt an almost three dimensional look. |
