Hoffman Challenge 2020
2020 Hoffman Challenge entry: "A Study in Abstract Art", Modern Piecing with Batiks".
Concepts and Creation:
Recently I started a journey of painting with watercolors and Researching abstract art. This journey correlated with the trend of Modern Quilting, the question arose, can you make a "Modern" Quilt with Batiks and florals? This is how my Study of Abstract Art and Modern quilting began.
This project is directly inspired by the Chance Block course I took with Jen Carlton-Bailly at QuiltCon 2020. With this quilt, I wanted to showcase improvisational piecing along with utilizing the watercolor techniques of translucence and light as the movement of the blocks cascades and in some cases intersect.
Construction:
The Techniques displayed in this quit utilize the Jen Carlton-Bailly chance block method. Each block was constructed by using a spinner to determine what elements would be added. The options were: add a stripe, triangle, Quarter circle, Half-circle, inset circle, or free form curve. Each block needed to have at least 3 piecing elements/ techniques. Once the initial quilt blocks were pieced together, additional inset circles were added to break up the traditional “Block” layout.
Overall quilting was created by using a diagonal loading method to create the diagonal waves using a wave ruler (Brand unknown). Rosettes were created with Q-bots “Rosette” pantograph.
To complete the modern quilting effect, the Quilt was finished using a facing method that included an inset hanging beaded fringe. I wanted the beaded fringe to represent dripping paint. When working with abstract art, sometimes the image goes past the physical canvas.
Challenge Fabrics used: All 6 of the Challenge fabrics (S4755-145 Spring, S4755-550 Big Sur, S4756-511 Bluff, S4756-580 Cypress, S4757-170 Meadow, S4757-580 Cypress) were utilized in this project. This quilt utilized pure piecing techniques. All of the Full circles are inset. | ||
In each of the Full Circles, I quilted a rosette. | Here is the closeup of the Ruler work. This quilting would almost be considered matchstick work as the lines are spaces about a quarter inch apart. | The back of the quilt. The Back of the quilt started out significantly larger to facilitate the diagonal loading of the quilt onto the longarm. |
Challenge Fabrics + Hoffman Batiks | I wanted a Tropical collection to enhance the initial challenge fabrics | This block shows Quarter and half Circle Piecing along with precision stripes. |
This block reminding me of the sun setting on a smoky day. Where the sun is almost red, and reflecting off of the water. The center is improvisational piecing, and there was a double inset circle. | This block shows curved piecing in both traditional and improvisational long with straight edge piecing. | As the Blocks progressed, some of the challenge fabrics melted into the background. |
This is not goin to be the final placement but merely an audition to see what was needed to make the challenge fabrics more noticeable. |
